What is "Fee Only Financial Planning," and why is it important?
Growing up in the northwest Chicagoland area, Brett left the sometimes “less-than-perfect” weather for a more pleasant stay at UC-Santa Barbara during his college years. Beyond basketball and sunshine, Brett worked toward and received a BA in Business Economics in 1993. Discouraged by the economic weakness on the coasts at that time and encouraged by the business opportunities of Chicago, Brett returned home and found a job on the floor of the Chicago Stock Exchange. Soon thereafter, he went to work for The Chicago Corporation, a mid-sized financial firm, in their asset management department, working in the interests of the higher-net-worth-individuals that they served. With Brett’s responsibilities including trading, research, and portfolio management, it came quite naturally to attend to the extensive course work to become a CFA charter holder. Detterbeck Wealth Management was founded in 2000 by Brett and his father Les, thus complementing each other’s expertise, offering a full-fledged wealth management experience for the client. Brett went on to pursue and achieve awardment of the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) certification in 2003. He remains an active participant at the CFA Society of Chicago events.
Currently, Brett is President and Head Portfolio Manager, and hence in charge of final determination of portfolio changes and new investment implementation. Brett has always been interested in the variety of investment vehicles available, and today is passionate about building diversified portfolios crafted to weather any market environment. Before alternatives became a household word, Brett was active in the area. Brett founded the Dynamic Tactical Investment Strategy in the 2005, a portfolio that actually was up in 2008 when the markets were down and also what formed the basis for the current DWM Liquid Alternatives portfolio. On a daily basis, Brett reviews every portfolio transaction in every client account and makes sure everything is in its appropriate place.
Outside of the office, Brett stays very active with his two sons’ busy schedules: sleeping in a cave type Cub Scout events, coaching YMCA Youth Basketball, going to the latest Disney movie, and frisbee golf are just some of the highlights. Brett and his wife share their interests of golf and sushi. Anyone that knows Brett will let you know that he doesn’t like to sit still. As such, exercising is a must which includes running, biking, swimming, and more. Brett also enjoys fantasy football, checking out the latest gadgets, homebrewing, and travelling.
