What is "Fee Only Financial Planning," and why is it important?

Dave has lived in Cincinnati since 1965.  He graduated from Miami University, Ohio, in 1981 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree cum laude in Accounting.

Dave has been providing financial planning advice to Cincinnatians for over 25 years. From 1981 to 1984 he worked as a Staff Accountant and Tax Specialist for Arthur Andersen & Company. While at Arthur Andersen Dave earned his CPA. In 1984 he moved to Grant Thornton and was promoted to a manager in their tax department. He specialized in taxation and personal financial planning. He completed the course work necessary to be designated a Certified Financial Planner licensee in 1988.

Dave started his own advisory firm, Foster Financial Advisory, Inc., in December 1989 after eight years in public accounting. Foster Financial Advisory, Inc. was a fee-only financial planning firm specializing in comprehensive financial planning for individuals. In late 1996, along with Mark Motley, he co-founded Foster & Motley, Inc., a Cincinnati based fee-only financial planning and investment management firm providing comprehensive financial advisory and investment management services primarily to individuals and families. Dave has a passion for financial planning, and enjoys the holistic nature of working with people and helping them to achieve their goals.

He has been a guest on CNBC and has been quoted in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Money Magazine, USA Today, Morningstar Investor, Ed Slott’s IRA Advisor, Investors Daily, Kiplinger Retirement Newsletter, Working Mother Magazine, Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati Post and the Greater Cincinnati Business Courier as well as a number of books on financial planning. Dave has been featured in an online question and answer session through the Wall Street Journal Online.

Dave has been recognized by WORTH Magazine as one of America’s “Best Financial Advisors” for four consecutive years. He is an active member of The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) and a member of the American Institute of CPA's PFP Division. Within NAPFA, he currently serves as member of the Estate Planning School of NAPFA University, designing and presenting estate planning programs to fellow planners. He is also a nationally recognized expert in the area of planning for retirement plan distributions, in particular when dealing with appreciated employer securities, as well as the income and estate tax implications of large IRA and retirement plan balances. He is a frequent speaker at national and regional financial planning conferences on this, and other subjects.
