Meet Eric Toya...

My background & What brought me here...

My first forays into financial services were with firms that paid commissions for the sale of products. I sought out a better way to deliver financial advice, free of the conflicts of interest inherent in commission-based sales. I worked as an Investment Specialist at Charles Schwab before completing the requirements to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professional in 2007. I joined the Navigoe team out of a desire to be part of a full service financial advisory firm, dedicated to delivering world class wealth management advice.

Why I chose this profession...
I come from a family of educators. Both of my siblings, my mom, as well as numerous uncles, aunts and cousins are teachers or administrators. My academic interests took me in a different direction. I found early on that I had a deep interest in finance and economics. While a Finance major at USC, I realized that my desire to educate and help people was equally strong. I guess this apple didn’t fall too far from the family tree. So much of what we do, as financial advisers, is educate and help clients make good decisions.

Outside of work, I’m most passionate about...
I am passionate about health and nutrition. Let’s face it, I love food. At one point, I woke up overweight and out of shape. My love of food had gotten the better of me, and while I had stopped noticing, my doctor thankfully had not. It was time for a change. I found that real food, prepared simply, is more enjoyable. I started a vegetable garden and became instantly hooked. Few things are more satisfying than preparing a beautiful meal with the vegetables harvested in my own backyard. Additionally, I started running regularly and adopted our dogs, Piper and Buster. If my wife and I don’t take them out for their daily walk, our shoes and clothes and houseplants pay the price by becoming chew toys.

When not in the office, look for me...

  • Going for a run or playing tennis
  • Planting, watering or harvesting my vegetable garden
  • In the kitchen, trying new recipes
  • Teaching our young dogs new tricks
  • Travelling to locales near and far (to try the local food, of course)
  • Catching a game, usually Lakers, Dodgers or USC football

How I’m advancing my career knowledge...
It is very important to me to be involved in the financial planning profession. I am an active member of the Financial Planning Association, currently serving as the President of the Los Angeles chapter. Through the FPA, I have volunteered to provide pro bono financial planning to underserved communities, been a mentor to others new to the profession and wrote a monthly financial “tip” column for the FPA national site.

Navigoe was created from a dream: a goal to establish a truly full-service financial planning firm. One that would deliver financial advice, free from the conflicts of interest created by the pay-for-product stock brokerage, bank or insurance company model. This dream, this goal, was that of Navigoe's founder, Scott Leonard. Back in the early 1990's, when Scott was starting his career in the financial services industry, he quickly became dissatisfied with the way his employers – an insurance company and then a large brokerage company – were focused more on product sales than the needs of his clients. As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM Professional, Scott believed that a client’s needs should be the sole objective, and thus chose a new path to providing personalized financial services.

In 1996, Scott founded Leonard Wealth Management, the predecessor to Navigoe, with the purpose of delivering all-inclusive wealth management services. We focus on combining the major disciplines of planning and investments in a fiduciary, fee-only manner.
