Working with colleagues who share my vision about creating a firm “that we would want to hire for ourselves” gives me great pleasure. But what is really rewarding is seeing clients transform from a place of anxiety to a place of clarity and confidence regarding their money.
I was fortunate in that I was raised in a family that communicated good “money messages.” I grew up hearing things like “If you can’t afford to pay cash, then you can’t afford it” from my dad. I put myself through college and graduated with a degree in Speech Communication, which helps me listen to and talk with my clients about their money. I obtained a MBA from Carnegie-Mellon which gave me the analytical tools to understand markets and finance. I then spent 20 years in New York City as an institutional investment professional, which provided me with invaluable real world experience. Lastly I earned the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER(TM) designation to round out my financial planning knowledge and founded Integris in 1997, where I focus mostly on financial planning. You might say that being at Integris is what I have been training for my whole life.
On a personal note, my wife, Pam, and I have been married since 1977 and we are the proud parents of two great adult children. Outside of work, Pam and I try to take a “lifelong learning” approach to life and are interested in history, performing and visual arts, photography, wine, and nature, which we pursue through hiking, reading, lectures, and travel.
Pam and I also appreciate that we have been very fortunate in many ways, and so we try to give back by donating our time and professional expertise to local non-profits. My current and recent past involvement have included serving in various board or committee capacities at Pacific Repertory Theater, Monterey Peninsula College Foundation, and CSU Monterey Bay Foundation, Monterey Museum of Art, and the Center for Photographic Art.
In 1995 Integris founder Gifford Lehman had been working as an institutional investment professional in New York since 1977. Giff and his wife Pam were going through their annual process of formally reviewing their finances, and consulting with their “team” of advisors – attorney, insurance agent, and accountant – to reconcile and integrate their financial life.
Giff found the process frustrating because his team was not really a team. Each advisor was an expert in his or her field, but no one was coordinating the process. Even for Giff, a seasoned investment professional, creating coherency from the input of all these individual experts was a struggle.
It seemed that this should not be so difficult, so Giff and Pam sat down and outlined what they needed to give them confidence in their financial affairs. They needed:
>>that integrated all aspects of their financial life into a coherent whole
>>from someone who could explain the issues clearly
>>and who would take into consideration not only their money, but who they were and what was important to them and their family.
Giff realized that if he and Pam were having this issue, other people who did not have his investment expertise would be in even greater need. Sensing an opportunity, he resolved to start the kind of firm that he and Pam would want to hire for themselves.
And thus Integris was born in 1997, with the guiding principal being the thoughtful and comprehensive integration of our clients’ financial lives with their goals and values – the kind of firm that we would want to hire for ourselves. Core to making this a reality are the below attributes.
As a fiduciary we are legally required to act in our clients' best interest. This along with our fee-only compensation and independence provide you with the confidence that our advice is objective.
Our experience, education and professional credentials reflect our commitment to what we do.
Our goal is to provide you with an integrated financial plan that includes all the major aspects of your financial life. Due to our comprehensive approach, our services are best suited for those with close to or greater than $1 million in investable assets.
Team Approach (Meet the Team)
We operate as a team, so you are hiring the entire firm, not just a single advisor. Additionally, we work with you, your attorney, and your tax and insurance professionals as partners with common goals - your goals.
