Fee-Only & Fiduciary

The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) is the country's leading association of fee-only and fiduciary financial planners.

Comprehensive Personal Financial Planning and Wealth Management are our primary services, where “comprehensive” means updating and monitoring entire net worth statements, including liabilities.  Written Quarterly Reports provide our professional opinions, recommendations and advice for net worth progress.

After an undergraduate Banking Degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Finance Department (1970), I worked for a community bank in New Tazewell, Tennessee. In those nine years, I attended banking schools where I was among the youngest, representing one of the smallest banks. I completed the University of Tennessee Executive Development Program shortly before working on my Masters of Business Administration (1982). After banking and financial planning related jobs, I founded Resource Advisory Services in 1985 to practice the profession as a fiduciary, using the Fee-Only compensation model. We do not want compensation from anyone other than our clients to influence our recommendations.

The founding members of NAPFA were my inspiration for launching Resource Advisory Services.  I became a member as quickly as practical (1986).  Through the years since, I have immersed myself in the NAPFA culture and educational opportunities, as well as explored many related educational opportunities outside NAPFA. In 2013, I was selected for a term on the NAPFA National Board of Directors, which extended to September 2016.

I am married to Christie N. Lewis, who is Office Manager/Client Services at Resource Advisory Services.  We live in Farragut, Tennessee.  Children and grandchildren are very important parts of our life. We are members of Concord United Methodist Church. I served on the Boards of Directors for Foothills Land Conservancy,  WUOT 91.9 FM - Knoxville's NPR affiliate and National Association of Personal Financial Advisors.

Serious amateur photography is my dominate hobby, which has inspired considerable travel through the years.  Images that give an insight into my lifestyle can be found with a search for J. David Lewis Photography in Knoxville, TN.

There is more to money than money®.

This is an expression we use often, because it quickly reflects our understanding that financial health is more than managing an investment portfolio.  Financial health is about building and enjoying wealth - which requires balance.  The best investment returns reasonably available, even in the best of economic times, are not nearly as important as comprehensive management of financial resources.
In other words; managing income for optimum allocations among investment contributions, debt reduction and enjoyment of day-to-day lifestyle is important.  In your future, dollars you contribute to investments will be a much larger portion of your total investments than returns. Reducing your liabilities should eventually eliminate debt payments, which are a drain of investment resources.  Progress in these two aspects of your future net worth can guide appropriate expenditures for life’s amenities in the present.  Building wealth does not have to be drudgery.  Confidence from regularly measuring progress, while considering the events that affect it and ways to improve it, can enhance enjoyment of your wealth-building pursuit.
Our Methods are built around these principles.  Visit www.ResourceAdv.com to learn more.  In a few minutes you should begin to understand our Fee-Only culture.
