What is "Fee Only Financial Planning," and why is it important?
Katherine “Kathy” Holden, ChFC®, CFP® is the founder and principal of Holden Financial Planning, a Fee-Only financial planning firm located in Wayne, PA, which is conveniently located near Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. She has participated in the financial services industry since 1994. Kathy feels it’s important to contribute positively to society. So in 2004 she decided to make a difference by assisting people in achieving financial peace of mind; thus Holden Financial Planning began. Holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology earned from the University of Pittsburgh has enabled her to look objectively at her clients’ unique circumstances, a necessity in financial planning.
She has also completed the CFP (Certified Financial Planner) certification process (which includes passing a rigorous ten hour exam and meeting specific experience and educational requirements) and is therefore authorized to use the CFP® marks of distinction. She abides by the Code of Ethics set forth by the CFP Board of Standards. By completing appropriate course work and fulfilling stringent experience and ethics requirements, she has also earned the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) professional designation from the American College, Bryn Mawr, PA.
A member of The Garrett Planning Network, which is an international affiliation of professional financial advisors, Kathy is dedicated to providing hourly, as-needed advice to people from all walks of life. Only 1% of the nation’s financial planning firms are structured this way. Also, as a NAPFA (National Association of Personal Financial Advisors), registered financial advisor, Kathy is part of the nation's largest professional association of Fee-Only comprehensive financial planning professionals. She has helped with their sponsored programs, such as, the “Your Money Bus” tour and regularly participates in their “Jump Start Retirement Plan Days”, where anyone can obtain free financial advice via online chats with advisors all over the United States. Currently she, also, serves on the NAPFA Northeast Mid-Atlantic Region Virtual Study Group, helping to plan and oversee educational webinars for members.
As both a Certified Financial Planner™ and NAPFA member she is required to complete continuing education in order to keep abreast of industry changes which further serves her client’s needs.
Kathy has been quoted in such well known venues as Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Consumer Reports Money Advisor, Financial Planning magazine, Bankrate.com, on personal finance journalist, Beth Kobliner’s Blog, USA Online - "Money Watch", Mainstreet.com, and has appeared on Philadelphia, NBC-10’s “All That and More” show. Also, she is a contributor to “Investing in an Uncertain Economy for Dummies”, a book focusing various investing themes with the intent of assisting the reader in areas important to their needs. She has organized and presented seminars for financial planners and has spoken locally on various financial topics.
As a participant in “The Seven Stages of Money Maturity®” seminar, offered by the Kinder Institute, she learned the importance of listening to clients and asking perceptive questions in order to ascertain clients’ goals.
Because giving back to the community is important to her, Kathy volunteers regularly with local organizations. In her spare time, she enjoys walking, gardening, reading, and especially, spending time with her family.
