NAPFA is the country's leading association of Fee Only Financial Planners.
What is "Fee Only Financial Planning," and why is it important?
Les was born in Chicago, a few blocks from Wrigley Field and has been a “wait til next year” Chicago Cubs fan for his entire life. He received his Bachelor of Science in Math/Accounting from the University of Illinois and passed the CPA exam in 1969. After graduation, Les worked for Arthur Andersen & Co, his father’s small manufacturing business, and McGladrey and Pullen, CPAs. In 1976, he started his own CPA firm, now called Detterbeck Johnson & Monsen and continues today as its Chairman of the Board. He received his M.B.A. from Roosevelt University, summa cum laude in 1978. Les became a CFP® certificant in 1987. Detterbeck Wealth Management was founded in 2000 by Les and his son Brett. Les became an AICPA/Personal Financial Specialist in 2001 and completed the extensive course work and successfully passed the three exams for the CFA certificate from 2000-2002. Les is part of an elite group of those that have attained the CPA, CFP® certificant, and CFA charter holder designations. Les is currently the Special Financial Correspondent for the Charleston Mercury and is the editor for the DWM newsletter and blog. Upon moving to Charleston in 2004, Les has served as Treasurer and Board Member for Carolina Youth Development and for Pure Theatre. He is currently on the Board of the Estate Planning Council of Charleston, and a Board Member and Treasurer of Lowcountry Orphan Relief.
Les has always been interested in personal finance and investment management. Growing up in a small family business, Les saw first-hand the important relationships between business, personal income, family dynamics and long-term planning. As a CPA, his role was primarily as financial consultant for small businesses and their owners, and the owners’ families. Now, his focus is on wealth management, combining his years of expertise and experience with his passion for helping individuals and families protect and enhance their net worth and legacy.
Les married his college sweetheart, Elise, in 1969. Elise has a Masters in French and taught high school French before pursuing her passion for remodeling homes. They have lived in 23 homes since they were married. Their two children and four grandchildren live in Chicagoland. They are some of Southwest Airlines favorite customers due to their and their family’s frequent flights between Chicago and Charleston. Les enjoys exercising, reading, golf, music and charity work. Les and Elise have visited over 50 countries and love to travel and learn.
