What is "Fee Only Financial Planning," and why is it important?
Mark Stempel works with professionals who are entering the second half of life. He has helped hundreds of clients lead richer and more fulfilling second-half lives—by consciously asking the right questions about their finances and their lives. Many of Mark’s clients have been very successful at accumulating assets over the years, and through their work with Mark, are now also successful at living the life of their dreams.
Mark grew up in a wealthy family in New Jersey. His grandfather was a self-made millionaire who started out with nothing on the lower east side of Manhattan. His grandfather worked in the garment industry for many years, and invested in real estate in Manhattan. Mark saw at an early age the benefits of long-term investing. He also saw family members who worked well into their 80s. He saw that even though his family was able to accumulate substantial assets, they were never quite able to fully enjoy the fruits of their labor. This puzzled Mark for many years. How is it that one could achieve so much materially but still not fully enjoy life? What does it really mean to live a good life?
Perhaps it was these questions that led Mark to study Philosophy. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Philosophy from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. He then went on to obtain an M.A. in Psychology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and become certified as a personal coach through the Newfield Network and New Ventures West. Mark also received a 3rd degree black belt in Aikido after 30 years of training. From these educational experiences, Mark learned three things: 1) the value of asking powerful questions; 2) the benefits of committed practice; and 3) the value of a coach in helping to ask the right questions and stay committed to practice when “life happens”.
By applying his new awareness to his family situation, Mark discovered that the one question that his family members had never asked themselves was:
“What is a good life?” In a culture that teaches us that more is always better, Mark discovered that this question holds the key not just for individuals, but for the sustainability of our culture as a whole. Mark’s mission is to share the power of this question with his clients so that after a life of accumulating wealth one doesn’t come to the end and ask: “What was that for?”
To bring the power of the question “What is a good life?” into the financial domain, Mark went on to become an Enrolled Agent and Certified Financial Planner. He is a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors. Mark also co-authored a book entitled: “Create the Business Breakthrough You Want: Secrets and Strategies from the World’s Greatest Mentors”. Ken Blanchard has referred to Mark as “one of the best business minds today”.
By applying the question of “What is a good life?” to his own life, Mark has finally been able to get out of the rat race and spend more quality time with his wife, Marie, and daughter, Emily, doing the things he loves to do. Mark enjoys practicing Aikido, Tai Chi, and Qigong. He also enjoys playing Native American flute.
