What is "Fee Only Financial Planning," and why is it important?

Tom McLean was born and raised on the east coast of the U.S.  After graduating from Georgia Southern University in 1990 he came west, originally to take a position with Microsoft. But, he was drawn away by an opportunity to be involved in a political campaign.

His deep history in financial planning allows him to enjoy working with individuals in the discipline. In 2004 he took a position with a major brokerage house and continued on that path through 2010.  This experience made him aware that he wanted to move away from emphasizing the sale process and focus on holistic financial planning.

He returned to college to participate in the acclaimed Texas Tech University personal financial planning program.  In 2012 he received a Master’s of Science in Personal Financial Planning and completed the Certified Financial Planner credential.   While in the program he was a graduate assistant.

From 2012 to 2014 he was a wealth manger with a large financial planning firm that managed over one billion dollars of assets for individuals and institutions.

Tom’s professional affiliations include the Financial Planning Association and the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors.

Tom and his family are excited to be located in the Olympia area.  This allows him to continue his passion for hiking.  In 1999 he completed the 2,160 mile Appalachian Trail and has set his sights on the Pacific Crest Trail. In addition to hiking, he and his family enjoy cooking, cycling and a good book.
