As a NAPFA-registered financial advisor and fee-only financial planner, my focus is to offer unbiased and straightforward financial advice to help you achieve whatever goals you may have in life - so you can plan for the long-term, while also having confidence in a plan to enjoy life until you get there. - John Clair, CFP®, NAPFA-Registered Financial Advisor

(804) 794-1981 ext. 3

Fee-Only financial planner located in Richmond, VA and Northern Neck serving clients locally and across the country

John Clair is a Fee-only Financial Planner and co-founder of EVOadvisers with offices in Richmond and Virginia's Northern Neck.  EVOadvisers offers transparent, easy to understand, financial planning and investment management services to families, busy professionals and entrepreneurs who have achieved a stage in life that requires more than a 401K to manage. John, a Richmond native, has extensive life experience gained on the staff of GE Capital while posted in Europe as well as a busy husband and father three young children.

John Clair empowers his clients, making complicated financial planning uncomplicated. It’s a no-nonsense down-to-earth approach folks can depend on.

He’s got the right training, but also the passion. John is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional (CFP®) and Magna Cum Laude graduate in Finance from Virginia Tech, with a Certificate in Financial Planning from Virginia Commonwealth University. His greatest fulfillment comes after meeting with a client and seeing they’ve made unmistakable progress together.

In 2016, John co-founded EVOadvisers – a continuation of Clair Financial Management, a Fee-Only Registered Investment Advisory and Financial Planning firm he founded after many years at GE in Financial Planning & Analysis roles. He gained valuable experience in diverse and global markets on assignments in locales ranging from Utah to Sweden. During those 10 years at GE, he learned the skills but felt he wasn’t close enough to real people, and that’s not who he wanted to be.

John doesn’t settle for mediocrity, in his own life or for his clients. He works tirelessly to truly get to know, understand and support his clients. He strives to help clients discover their personal vision for their family and then walks with them on the path to achieve it. He believes his clients are much more than a retirement portfolio, wanting them to live a great life today and in the future.

John’s expert advice is often shared on local TV news including NBC, CBS and ABC and has been quoted in the Washington Times, Forbes, Reuters and many more. John also produces and hosts the podcast EvoFi: A Finance Podcast For Humans, a show about money, economics, and being a human in spite of those things.

Outside of work, John gladly serves as Board President of The Hawthorne Cancer Foundation, which provides financial and emotional support to cancer patients. On the weekends, he’s usually seen surrounded by his wife Jen and his 3 young children, who often give him a crash course in spontaneity. He loves being outdoors and living near the water where there’s a peace you just don’t get in a city.  If there’s any time left in the week, John occasionally plays bass guitar in a local rock n’ roll band.

John Clair is a Member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors

The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) is a leading professional association of Fee-Only financial advisors - highly trained professionals who are committed to working in the best interests of those they serve.

NAPFA members live by three important values:

  • To be the beacon for independent, objective financial advice for individuals and families.
  • To be the champion of financial services delivered in the public interest.
  • To be the standard bearer for the emerging profession of financial planning.

EVOadvisers traces its roots back to 2006. After a combined 30 years as senior leaders in technology and finance at a Fortune 50 company, we joined forces to form a new kind of Fee-Only financial advisory firm to serve people better.

At EVOadvisers, we pride ourselves in providing "You-Only" financial advice. That means, our clients get financial advice with a conscience, not sales commissions.  We want to help you get the right kind of help even if you don't choose us. So, if you have reached a point in life where you have more than a 401K to worry about, we can help. Led by Dave O'Brien (Chair of NAPFA) and John Clair, our clients first come to us when:

  • Their finances have outgrown their ability and time to manage them
  • A big life event has occurred or is impending and they need financial advice
  • Are wondering if their current advisor or broker still fits their needs

If this sounds like you, find out more at and ask about You-Only advice. Capitalism with a Conscience.
