You're certainly capable of figuring this stuff out, but is that really how you want to spend your time? - Kevin Mahoney, CFP®

Illumint offers virtual financial guidance specifically for the millennial generation. The Washington, DC-based company specializes in navigating the new financial decisions that arise during our late 20s and 30s as we try to balance work, relationships, & children.

Kevin Mahoney, CFP®, is the founder & CEO of Illumint, which offers fee-only financial guidance specifically for the millennial generation. He specializes in navigating the new financial decisions that arise during our late 20s and 30s as we try to balance work, relationships, and children. Kevin, who is married with two young boys, holds virtual meetings at off-hours so that these conversations can wait until after deadlines, date nights, and bath time.

I’m the father of two young boys who, immediately upon arriving in the world, started to challenge any pre-existing notions that I held about my time. I quickly began to view mundane adult tasks, from grocery shopping to house repairs, as time not spent going down a slide, reading Dr. Seuss, or building train tracks for Thomas the Tank Engine. Financial chores were probably the most frustrating task. My to-do list never seemed to grow shorter, especially now that the kids had introduced new decisions into the mix. Our country's financial system didn’t help. I always felt the need to proceed warily to avoid high fees and unsuitable services. My wife and I tried working with my parents' financial advisor, but our experience wasn't positive. The process was poorly defined, the technology was cumbersome, and the suggestions we received failed to address our questions. I have an undergraduate business degree and an MBA in finance -- if I felt this way, how much more stressed must other people in my age group feel? I ultimately decided to apply my finance background to changing the answer to that question. My company's name, Illumint, tries to evoke the action of shining light on something obscure or confusing. Through a business model designed specifically for young families and couples, I want to add that light to your financial decisions, so that you can finally focus on more important activities.
