Kevin Sweeney is Principal and Wealth Manager at Modera Wealth located in Inverness, FL.
In working with clients, my goals are to get to know them and their aspirations, to help them determine the critical objectives in their lives and then to develop financial planning and investment strategies designed so they can live their lives as they envision them. I see client relationships as being part of a team working together to solve the issues clients bring to us. Much of what we handle can be complicated, and it’s critical to enable clients to understand their situations and to provide them with clear options that allow them to be comfortable with the choices they make. A major part of what we do is to educate clients on where they are financially and what their choices are so they can be confident in the paths they choose.
Like many of my colleagues at Modera Wealth Management, I took an indirect route to financial planning but one that I believe prepared me well for this role. I was a commercial litigator in Boston for over two decades and represented clients in an array of civil matters. While working as a trial lawyer, I found myself drawn to learning about planning for my retirement. I’ve said half-jokingly that it dawned on me I was becoming more excited planning for my retirement than I was working toward it. Like with so many things in my life, my wife, who learned of the CFP® (Certified Financial Planner) course of study at a university in Boston, pointed me toward my career in financial planning. I took the CFP® courses at night while continuing to practice law and made a career switch in 2007. As a Certified Financial Planner™ professional, I’ve been able to apply the listening, questioning, problem-solving and advocacy skills I developed as a lawyer to provide counsel to our clients on their financial planning needs.
My wife Deirdre and I moved from Boston to Florida in 2016, and I’ve been working out of Modera’s Inverness office since that time. We’ve enjoyed the transition, the absence of snow from November through March and the opportunity to travel around Florida. Travel is a passion for us, and we were fortunate to spend a year living in Rome and Orvieto, Italy and traveling around Italy and the eastern Mediterranean. In our new home in Florida with our two labradoodles, Deirdre and I have remained active in charitable endeavors: she’s mentoring a girl through the Big Sister program, and I’ve continued my involvement with fund raising events for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Dana Farber Cancer Institute and in running a high school scholarship fund in my sister’s memory.
