As a fee-only financial planner, my focus is to offer unbiased financial advice to help you achieve your life goals. - Scott O'Brien, CFP®
Fee-Only Financial Planner serving clients nation-wide, with offices in Dallas, Fort Worth, Orange County and San Diego.

Hi I'm Scott, a Partner at WorthPointe, and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional with over 20 years of experience. I help coordinate my clients’ financial lives and assist them in making smart decisions within the areas of investments, retirement planning, insurance strategies, tax minimization, and estate planning.
I work with many types of clients most of whom are trying to figure out if they are on track to meet their financial goals, if they are invested properly to minimize risk while still achieving good returns and if there are ways to save on taxes in the process.
My interest in this profession started when I was young and growing up in a household parented by 2 educators. While education is a noble profession it is not known for paying well so my parents tried to make intelligent decisions about how to save and invest for retirement, college expenses and health care costs. In turn, I became fascinated about investments and later on about how to incorporate all aspects of financial planning to meet financial goals. This prompted me to get my Certified Financial Planner certification. As a career, I thought “what a great way to help people”.
I think having a financial plan in place is similar to having a plan for good health in place. When you first see a doctor he/she will ask you a lot of questions to determine where you are currently, maybe some tests are ordered, a diagnosis is made, a treatment plan is outlined and then implemented with monitoring for updating as time and circumstances change.
Basically, that is what I do with clients in terms of their finances so they can move forward doing the things that they enjoy doing -- a Financial Physical so to speak accompanied by straightforward advice. I believe in putting the interests of my client first and customizing financial plans for each client. That means acting as a fiduciary for my clients. No commissions and no referral fees.
I'm an active writer in the field and authored Evidence Based Investing, which separates investing fact from fiction using data from academic studies. Along with a few colleagues, I co-authored WorthPointe’s e-book, Surviving to Thriving: A Financial Resource for Divorcees and Widows. I have been quoted in numerous publications, including The Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, Money Magazine, MainStreet.com, and Investopedia.com.
From 2015 through 2023, I have been honored as a Five Star Professional Wealth Manager by Texas Monthly Magazine. Out of several thousand advisors, I was selected for this award for my years in the industry, clean regulatory card, client retention, education, and professional designations.
Volunteering for meaningful causes is important to me. I served on the board and am a past President of the Board of Directors for Susan G. Komen Greater Central East Texas which serves 57 counties from Austin to Tyler. I'm also a former board member for the Center for Child Protection, an organization that assists children that have been abused. I continue volunteering with both organizations.
If you’re looking to develop a solid plan to meet your financial goals and work with someone that will give you objective advice, let’s set up a call.
