Fee-Only Financial Planner serving Orange County, CA including Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Yorba Linda

Steven Medland is a Orange, CA fee-only financial planner. TABR Capital Management, LLC provides comprehensive and objective financial planning and investment management to help pre-retirees, reitrees, women in transition and clients experiencing sudden wealth organize, grow and protect their assets through life’s transitions. As a fee-only, fiduciary, and independent financial advisor, Steven Medland is never paid a commission of any kind, and has a legal obligation to provide unbiased and trustworthy financial advice.

While most high school students were dreaming about the day they get their driver’s license, Steve Medland was already investing in the stock market with his father’s guidance. Growing up in Orange County, his parents stressed the importance of savings; however, money was tight when it came time to apply for college. Undaunted, he applied for and received a congressional nomination and full scholarship to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Equipped with his engineering degree after four years at the academy, he set his course for a new destination: Navy submarine officer.

Though Steve was only earning about $24,000 per year initially after graduation, he immediately started saving $150 per month and investing it in the stock market. Applying the discipline he learned in the Navy, with each raise and promotion Steve took at least half of the monthly increase and added it to his investments. This maneuver eventually allowed him to leave the Navy to fund and pursue his interest in finance by earning an MBA from the Wharton School.

While Steve was earning his MBA, the internet-bubble collapse was creating market havoc. He contacted his advisor, Bob Kargenian at Prudential, and asked to spend the summer of 2001 analyzing Bob’s approach to business with the tools he had developed in business school. During that summer, Steve experienced the difference between generic financial advice and how well-researched financial planning could lead to a more secure and rewarding life. It was then that he realized financial planning was no longer just a personal interest, but his calling.

The two had a productive summer together and after Steve graduated, Bob brought him on board. After a year of working together, the pair co-founded TABR in 2004.

Steve’s strategic and tactical approach to financial planning has made him a reliable source for insight about market trends; he has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, BusinessWeek, NewsWeek, U.S. News & World Report and Kiplinger’s Retirement Report, among others. He is a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA), the Financial Planning Association® (FPA®), and the Paladin Registry, an independent resource for fiduciary investment professionals and ProVisors.

Giving back is an essential part of Steve’s life. He has helped build seven homes with Habitat for Humanity and currently volunteers with Homes for Our Troops, an organization which builds specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans.

Steve is also a volunteer interviewer for the University of Pennsylvania/Wharton School Alumni Interview Program. The Alumni Interview Program is dedicated to offering an interview to every undergraduate applicant to the University of Pennsylvania. In doing so, the program makes Penn more accessible to all applicants, allows them a chance to advocate for themselves, and provides Penn Admissions with information they might not otherwise find in an application.

We look at investing differently

Investing strikes an emotional chord for individuals and professionals alike. This is where our disciplined, objective, and systematic approach serves you so well. Our approach to the markets can be summed up in three words: Disciplined Risk Management. In fact, TABR is an acronym for Technical Analysis Based Risk-Management. We believe that preserving capital is as important as generating big returns. To achieve these twin goals, we use proven quantitative and technical models to guide our asset commitment decisions.

Our primary objective is to develop strategies for our clients which will enable them to achieve their long-term financial goals with less risk.

The TABR approach

The TABR approach is rooted in the fact that no one can consistently predict future market returns, nor is it necessary to do so to achieve financial security. Asset returns are cyclical, and are determined by a variety of factors.

Stocks’ inherent volatility doesn’t really bother most investors – as long as prices go up. But sharp market downturns are a painful reminder that stocks often follow a rocky trail. On the other hand, the power of bonds to smooth stock market risk over time is often lost on investors.

That’s why the history of market cycles and investor behavior points to the need to develop your own investment philosophy and stick to it. What accounts for most investor mistakes? Pure and simple, it is relying on emotions rather than data. In short, data and the discipline to stay the course are absolute requirements for achieving success in the financial markets.

What sets TABR apart

First, you are not a number. You don’t need to wait for a series of junior associates to return your call. You get direct access to our Partners. And there’s never any “pressure” because we don’t receive favors or commissions.

Secondly, in actively managing and investing your funds, our true north is charted on what will bring you closer to your long-term financial goals.

Your money matters to you, as does ours, which is why we follow our own advice with our families’ finances. As the saying goes, we do indeed have “skin in the game.” We don’t advise you to do one thing and then we do another.

Tactical and strategic

Led by Chartered Market Technician Bob Kargenian and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Steve Medland, we methodically monitor market analytics and influencers to help determine the appropriate allocation for your assets. No matter what your level of risk tolerance—conservative, moderate, or aggressive—we use sharp tactical skills and strategic vision to help you understand your full range of options and arrive at an investment strategy that’s personalized to meet your needs and goals.

  • For stock market allocations, we use a combination of actively managed stock, money market, inverse, and index funds, and also use TABR’s Dividend Stock Strategy as part of our toolkit.
  • Our bond market strategy involves using a combination of short-term/intermediate-term bond funds with high yield corporate bond funds, in addition to Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA) funds, and multi-sector bond funds.
  • In a majority of portfolios, a portion of the equity allocation is devoted to real estate, via mutual funds and ETF’s (Exchange Traded Funds).
  • Net exposure to each element in a portfolio is determined by the position of our risk management models.
